Synopsis

In the rain-slicked sprawl of 2047 Tokyo, underground DJ and code-samurai Vex Void receives a ghost file from her long-vanished rival, DJ Null. The track contains the master key to the city's central server, which will purge every unsanctioned memory and identity at midnight. Vex jacks into the lethal neon-grid simulation where the rival's encrypted beats manifest as lethal data phantoms, racing against corporate enforcers and decaying code that threatens to trap her forever. As she layers the final sample, Vex confronts the horrifying truth that her own memories were fabricated by the system she now seeks to destroy.

The story

INT. ABANDONED ROOFTOP CLUB - NIGHT

Rain hammers the neon canopy. VEX VOID (30s, chrome braids, battered deck) stands alone behind a holographic turntable. The last dancers have vanished into static. She slots a cracked data shard into her rig. A low-frequency hum rises, then a distorted vocal line bleeds through.

VEX
Null... you always did hide the hook in the noise.

The beat fractures. Her deck sparks. On the skyline, the CENTRAL SERVER TOWER pulses blood-red: 00:47:12 until PURGE. Vex's eyes widen as a ghosted face flickers across every screen.

VEX (CONT'D)
Midnight. You're still in there.

She jacks in. The world pixelates into the GRID.

Why now

In an era of algorithmic memory wipes, vanishing social archives, and AI-driven identity curation, Dead Frequency captures the terror and thrill of fighting for the right to remember who we are before the servers decide we never existed.

FADE IN.

INT. GOLDEN GROVE - DAWN

Watercolour mist hangs between towering painted trees whose leaves drift downward like loose parchment. VEX VOID, a slender figure in layered robes of muted ochre, kneels beside a shallow pool that reflects unfinished skies. He dips a reed brush into the water and draws a slow circle. The circle opens into a floating island that exhales golden light. A single leaf lands on the surface. It carries faint musical staves. Vex lifts it, studies the incomplete notation, and hums one tentative note. The leaf brightens. Far above, the World Spire shimmers, its colours already thinning at the edges.

EXT. GOLDEN GROVE - CONTINUOUS

Vex rises. Bare feet stained with pigment press into soft earth. He moves between translucent trunks, collecting stray pigments in small clay bowls. Painted leaves drift past his face like forgotten notes. He pauses at a reflective pool and watches the World Spire pulse once, weakly.

ROWAN VALE (O.S.)
Every melody is a thread holding the painted world from fading.

Vex turns. Rowan Vale stands translucent among the trees, watercolour robes shifting between amber and teal.

VEX VOID
I collect what remains. I do not finish songs.

ROWAN VALE
The wind through these leaves already hums the first line of Ashen Quill’s lost melody. Listen longer.

Vex listens. The leaves rustle in measured cadence, each sentence ending with the faint sound of turning pages. He does not answer. He pockets the leaf and walks deeper into golden light.

EXT. GOLDEN GROVE - DUSK

Colours begin to thin at the edges of the world. Vex stops beneath a great canopy. An abandoned scroll drifts down and lands in his hands. He unrolls it. Encrypted staves glow faintly. The first colours of dusk pale further.

VEX VOID
(soft, deliberate)
This was meant to stay hidden.

He hesitates, fingers tracing the notation. Fear catches in his baritone.

VEX VOID (CONT'D)
If I sing it, the unmaking may arrive sooner.

He rolls the scroll and tucks it inside his robe. He does not move.

EXT. GOLDEN GROVE - NIGHT

Vex stands motionless as leaves continue to fall. The scroll burns cold against his chest. He stares at the thinning horizon.

VEX VOID
(to himself)
Preserve what remains.

EXT. THE PAINTED VEIL - NIGHT

Vex steps through the first painted veil. Translucent canvases billow like curtains. Half-finished landscapes rearrange around him. He enters the labyrinth realm carrying the scroll.

INT. THE PAINTED VEIL - CONTINUOUS

Rowan Vale appears beside him, braided hair trailing like brushstrokes.

ROWAN VALE
Loss is the only pigment that never fades. Walk with it.

VEX VOID
I walk alone.

ROWAN VALE
Then listen to the one who walked before you.

They move together. Vex sings a single note. A path of glowing staff lines appears across a living mural. New colours bloom where the note lands.

INT. THE PAINTED VEIL - LATER

Vex and Rowan trace more staff lines. Each note opens fresh pigment. Murals breathe. Finnian Reed steps from behind a canvas, sleeves rolled, forearms covered in dried pigment.

FINNIAN REED
(warm tenor, laughing between words)
You hum like a brush that fears the final stroke. I guarded these outer veils. The melody you carry once belonged to Ashen.

VEX VOID
He vanished to protect the Spire.

FINNIAN REED
Or to leave it a map. Take this pigment. It answers the middle staves.

Finnian presses a small vial into Vex’s hand and remains behind as the canvas settles.

INT. THE PAINTED VEIL - LATER

Vex and Rowan reach a vast canvas depicting the World Spire. Vex realises the melody restores rather than destroys. The false victory lands like a page turning.

VEX VOID
It was never meant to break the Spire. It was meant to keep its colours breathing.

The realisation offers no safety. The canvas begins to pale at the edges.

INT. THE PAINTED VEIL - CONTINUOUS

Shades of long-vanished painters rise from faded sections. Their forms press against the golden light. Ashen Quill’s echoing whisper overlaps itself among them.

ASHEN QUILL (V.O.)
The thread was always meant to be found. Yet every finder arrives too late.

Vex sings louder. The shades retreat but the light thins further.

INT. HOLLOW OF LOST HUES - NIGHT

Vex enters the sunken chamber alone. Pigments have drained into cracked earth. Ghost-images linger on the walls. The melody scroll cracks in his hands. Half the notes dissolve into mist.

VEX VOID
Nothing painted can last.

He stands in quiet desolation. A single persistent beam of late light falls across his face.

ISOLDE MOSS (O.S.)
(low contralto, deliberate)
Silence tests the singer before the final note is given.

Isolde Moss steps from shadow, cloak of overlapping leaves rustling. She places the last intact note into Vex’s palm.

ISOLDE MOSS (CONT'D)
Sing from memory now. The heart supplies what pigment cannot.

She dissolves into the beam of light.

INT. THE PAINTED VEIL - PREDAWN

Vex remembers Rowan’s words. He begins humming the missing notes from memory and heart. Each remembered phrase restores a portion of the scroll. Rowan appears translucent beside him once more.

ROWAN VALE
You no longer collect. You complete.

VEX VOID
Then walk with me to the heartroot.

EXT. WORLD SPIRE - DAWN

Vex and Rowan reach the massive root-bound tower. Living musical notation covers the bark. Colours pulse slowly from base to peak. Vex steps inside the heartroot.

INT. WORLD SPIRE - HEARTROOT - DAWN

Vex sings the full melody. The final sustained golden chord halts the unmaking. Colours flood back through the Spire. Rowan dissolves into the restored light.

VEX VOID
(soft)
Endings can be gentle.

EXT. WORLD SPIRE - ETERNAL DAWN

A single steady brushstroke remains on the canvas of the world. The World Spire glows softly under eternal dawn. Vex stands barefoot at the summit, pigment-stained feet steady, the horizon breathing once more.
