INT. CHICAGO EL TRAIN - NIGHT

Rain streaks the windows. MARCUS HALE, 32, wiry, in a threadbare CAT IN THE HAT costume, balances on the pole rhyming for tips. A bored CROWD ignores him. He tips the striped hat at a SLEEPY TEEN.

MARCUS
One fish two fish red fish blue--

The hat pulses. The teen's eyes glaze. Marcus sees FLASHES: the teen's first kiss, a fight with mom. Marcus staggers, richer somehow.

MARCUS (CONT'D)
...and you just gave me something new.

The train lurches. Marcus pockets a forgotten twenty. His smile fades as he catches his reflection--the hat's grin looks wider than his own.

Why now

In an era of constant digital memory theft social media erasure and fractured families this story taps primal fears about what we lose when we trade attention for survival making it an urgent cautionary fable for parents and creators alike.

FADE IN.

INT. CHICAGO VIADUCT - NIGHT

Sodium vapor lamps buzz overhead. Rain films the concrete pillars. MARCUS HALE, late 30s, stands in a faded red-and-white striped coat and bent stovepipe hat. A small neural mesh glints at the brim. Three commuters watch from the dry side.

Marcus tips the hat. A low hum rises. One commuter’s eyes glaze for half a second. Marcus catches the credit transfer on his wristband and moves on.

EXT. TENTH-FLOOR WALK-UP - LATER

Marcus climbs the stairs. The coat is now folded under his arm. He unlocks the door.

INT. MARCUS’S APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS

LENA HALE, 10, sits at the table with a tablet. She does not look up.

LENA
You were late again.

MARCUS
Traffic under the bridge.

He sets the hat on the counter. The mesh inside it still pulses once, faintly.

INT. MARCUS’S APARTMENT - MORNING

Lena eats cereal. Marcus checks his wristband credits. She glances at the hat.

LENA
Why do people pay to forget?

MARCUS
Some memories are better left unbanked.

INT. MARCUS’S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Marcus preps the suit. Lena’s school implant check pings on her tablet.

LENA
Implant scan tomorrow. They say it’s routine.

MARCUS
Routine’s good.

EXT. CHICAGO VIADUCT - NIGHT

Marcus performs. Commuters laugh, then blank. Credits ping.

DR. VOSS, early 50s, steps from the shadows.

DR. VOSS
Private show. Triple rate. Tonight.

Marcus studies him.

MARCUS
Under the same lights?

DR. VOSS
Exactly.

INT. MARCUS’S APARTMENT - LATER

Marcus returns. Lena stares at family photos.

LENA
Who’s the woman with the dark hair?

Marcus freezes.

MARCUS
Your mother. Maya.

Lena’s eyes stay empty.

INT. MARCUS’S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Marcus tries to disable the mesh. The suit hums, feeding fragments of strangers’ lives into his skull. He rips it off, breathing hard.

EXT. SOUTH SIDE DINER - NIGHT

Marcus meets JAX REYES, mid 40s, in a booth. Jax chews gum.

JAX
That mesh was mine once. Corporate demo. They canceled it when it started eating recall.

MARCUS
How do I turn it off?

JAX
You don’t. You overload it or you sell.

INT. CHICAGO VIADUCT - NIGHT

Marcus tests controlled extractions on willing marks. Lena’s gaps widen at home. She forgets homework instructions.

INT. ABANDONED UNDERPASS - NIGHT

Voss shows Marcus a live feed of Lena’s remaining memories uploaded to his ledger.

DR. VOSS
Your daughter’s data is quite valuable now.

Marcus’s hands shake.

EXT. CITY GRID - NIGHT

Voss’s crew tracks Marcus through residual mesh pings. Footsteps echo.

INT. MARCUS’S APARTMENT - DAWN

Lena wakes unable to recognize Marcus at all.

LENA
Where’s my dad?

Marcus stands in the doorway, gutted.

INT. MARCUS’S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Marcus sits alone wearing only the blackened hat. Rain taps the window.

EXT. SOUTH SIDE SERVER FARM - NIGHT

Marcus jacks the suit into the farm’s main node. Servers whine. He floods Voss’s ledger with corrupted files from his own memories.

The mesh shorts. Marcus collapses.

INT. NORTHWEST MEMORIAL HOSPITAL - DAY

Marcus wakes. MAYA TORRES, late 30s, stands by the bed. Lena sits beside him.

LENA
Daddy?

Marcus smiles weakly. She remembers his name but nothing of the performances.

EXT. NORTHWEST MEMORIAL HOSPITAL - DAY

Marcus and Lena walk away under flickering sodium lights. The ruined hat swings in a plastic bag. Distant train rumble fades.
