Synopsis

In a near-future megacity crippled by heatwaves and energy blackouts, residents live under strict rationing enforced by omnipresent drones. When sharp-eared retiree Harlan Fixx overhears the telltale hum from beneath his downstairs neighbor's floorboards, he launches a one-man investigation that exposes a network of hidden luxuries enjoyed by the elite. What begins as petty suspicion escalates into a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse as Harlan's own secrets surface and the authorities close in. As alliances fracture and bodies drop, Harlan discovers the floor unit is merely the entry point to a vast underground resistance fighting for climate equity. The sweltering apartments become pressure cookers of class resentment, forcing every character to choose between comfort and survival. In the end, the true horror lies not in the machine but in who controls the temperature. Vivid practical effects and sweat-drenched sound design immerse viewers in the oppressive heat, while razor-sharp dialogue skewers modern anxieties around scarcity and spying neighbors.

The story

INT. APARTMENT CORRIDOR - NIGHT

Sweat glistens on every surface. HARLAN FIXX (60s, gaunt, wild eyes) presses his ear to the floor outside apartment 4B. A faint mechanical HUM vibrates through the cheap linoleum.

HARLAN
(whispering)
I knew it. You're hiding an air conditioner under your floor, aren't you?

He scribbles notes on a crumpled pad. A drone BUZZES past the window. Harlan freezes until it passes.

Suddenly the door cracks open. LENA VOSS (30s, exhausted) stares down at him.

LENA
You again. Get lost before the sensors log you.

HARLAN
(smiling coldly)
Tell that to the people dying in the street while you freeze your secrets.

Lena slams the door. Harlan presses his ear back down. The hum grows louder, almost mocking.
