  In a rain-soaked junk shop that never opens, Bagpuss wakes from a doze and assembles his extraction team: Professor Yaffle the wooden bookend, the mice who live inside the skirting board, and Madeleine the rag doll. Their client is a cracked china doll whose owner has lost the will to play with her. To restore the doll’s value, Bagpuss must descend three dream layers and plant the simple notion “someone still loves you.”
  Each layer is another version of the same shop, only older and more derelict. In the first, the mice forge a totem from a chipped saucer that spins on its edge when they are awake. In the second, Yaffle’s mechanical head becomes a maze of filing cabinets containing every story the shop has ever told. In the deepest layer the team finds the owner’s childhood self, still waiting for the shop to open. Bagpuss delivers the planted idea by purring it into the child’s ear while the china doll watches from the counter.
  The kick—a shop bell ringing three times—should wake them all, yet the bell never stops. The team realises the rain outside is painted on the windows and the shop sign reads “Closed Forever.” Bagpuss stares at his own paws and sees they are made of the same faded fabric as the rag doll. The final image is the china doll, now whole, gently placing the sleeping Bagpuss into the window display and turning the sign to “Open.”
